Push yourself and your crew to your limits on the Lambay Rowing Challenge 2020. A demanding 19km open-sea row circumnavigating Lambay Island off the coast of North County Dublin.

The 2020 Lambay Challenge will follow best practice and government guidelines around COVID-19 to ensure a safe environment for all our competitors.

Join us for an open water rowing experience unlike any other. This is a challenging, thrilling row on Ireland’s gorgeous east coat.

Now in it’s third year, the Lambay Challenge is an all-inclusive row. It is open to traditional wooden working boats, currachs, skiffs, singles, gigs and longboats. From eight boats in the first year, our 2019 event was fully sold out months in advance with over 30 boats starting on the day. Crews from around Dublin and Ireland were joined by visiting boats from the US, UK, Netherlands and Denmark.

Lambay Challenge 2020

  • Given the extraordinary circumstances we find ourselves in, this year’s challenge will be limited to 12 boats only.
  • To ensure we can welcome a range of participants, entries will be limited to a maximum of two boats per club. We ask all clubs to respect this limit in the interests of fair play and goodwill.
  • Guidelines around spectator numbers and other attendees, both on and off the water, will be published closer to the day in line with public health guidelines.
  • Given the current climate, we will sadly be unable to host a family fun day and BBQ as part of this year’s challenge.
  • Never fear, our famous Lambay Raffle will still go ahead and tickets are now on sale here.

Given the limited spaces available, we are anticipating high demand. If you want to take part, we encourage you to register your boat and crew as soon as possible. Single boats are accepted but experience is essential.

More details information regarding the line-up for the day and the safety protocols will be made available to all participants in advance.

Not for the faint of heart, the Lambay Challenge is at the heart of Fingal Rowing Club’s annual calendar of events. We look forward to seeing you on the water!

Our 2019 Season

January 25, 2020 by FingalRowingClub

2019 has been a busy year for Fingal Rowing Club (FRC) with crews competing in the East Coast Regattas from May to the August and in long distance races in September and October.

The year started with an incredible achievement as 12 club members trained for and completed the Celtic Challenge; a gruelling 150km charity relay race billed as the longest true rowing race in the world.

If you were anywhere near Rush Sailing Club or the estuary on the bright summer evenings, you’ll have spotted the club’s wooden skiffs in the water for hours at a time as crews at all levels trained in preparation for the seasons races. This hard work was rewarded with plenty of silverware coming home to Rush this year, including three East Coast Rowing medals and three medal from the All Ireland Rowing Championships in Dingle last August.

On the 28th September, 30 boats and crews from around Dublin, and further afield from the US, Netherlands and Scandinavia travelled to Fingal to take part in the third annual Lambay Challenge. Despite choppy conditions, a fantastic day was had by local families and our visitors, with success for FRC with the Intermediate Ladies winning the Ladies skiff race.

FRC made an excellent showing in other long races his year too – with crews rowing 18km through three counties in the Barrow Challenge, and claiming gold in the 6k charity Hope Race on the Liffey and in the challenging 28km Hobbler Challenge in Dun Laoghaire.

Fundraising is a hugely important part of the clubs activities and there was plenty of fun off the water at the Mr and Mrs Night in September and Family Fortunes in November, among others. The club also works hard to raise money for other local and national charities, including the RNLI.

Several ‘Try Rowing’ days over the course of the season introduced new and potential members to the club and there are more of these already scheduled for 2020 for anyone curious about the sport.

We’re looking forward to lots more silverware, good craic and time on the water in 2020!

Winner: Club of the Year 2019

January 13, 2020 by FingalRowingClub

Here at Fingal Rowing Club, we were proud and delighted to be named CLUB OF THE YEAR 2019 at the Dublin People Awards in December 2019.

We were honoured to be shortlisted in this category alongside so many wonderful North Dublin clubs.

At Fingal Rowing Club, we are all about bringing people onto the water, challenging our members to push themselves inside the boats (and outside of them) and to have fun doing it. Although we are a young club, we have achieved a huge amount and this Award is a wonderful recognition of that. We do everything we can to make our community proud of us and we are very grateful for all the support we get. Here’s to another fantastic year in 2020!

Lambay Rowing Challenge BoatShot_Lambay-1

Two distinguished families, a new kind of Irish whiskey, and a place of inaccessible mystery. Once upon a most unusual island, two entrepreneurial spirits from two very old families decided to form a unique partnership. Together, they’d make a whiskey. But not just any whiskey – their triple distilled Irish whiskey would be one of dynasty and devilment, of rarity and refinement.

Their idea was to craft an innovative Irish whiskey inspired by the island of Lambay, ancestral home of Alexander Baring, and finished with the techniques and expertise of Maison Camus, ancestral home of Cyril.

Alexander Baring hails from the peculiar paradise of Lambay Island, a mere three miles off the coast of Dublin. Lambay Island, a veritable odyssey of oddities, is also home to a herd of grazing cattle, an improbability of puffinsand an even more improbable troupe of red-necked wallabies.

The entrepreneurial Cyril Camus, is part of the fifth generation of Maison Camus, that illustrious French family famous the world over for their incomparable Cognac. Bonded by a love of nature and the finer things in life, Cyril and Alexander make the perfect partners in whiskey production.

We are delighted to have Lambay Whiskey as our sponsor and hope this relationship will grow and develop over the years.
